40 years' experience in the design and manufacture of robust washroom solutions

Wallgate’s sanitaryware installed in Fieldhead Hospitals new £17 million acute mental health centre

Commissioned under P21+, Fieldhead Hospital in Wakefield has undergone huge developments, with the previous Trinity building completely demolished to make room for a new contemporary designed state-of-the art development in its place.

The construction was carried out by Interserve and won the Committed to Construction in Humber and West Yorkshire Award, showcasing the very best of professionalism, excellence and innovation within the region. Architects Stephen George designed the building with mechanical and electrical consultants SDA and Clifford Cooper and Sons as the mechanical and electrical contractors.

Wallgate’s robust sanitaryware products were selected for this new purpose-built hospital which will treat patients from across South West Yorkshire Partnerships geographical footprint and incorporates the Stanley male adult acute mental health ward and Walton psychiatric intensive care ward.

Wallgate’s anti-ligature, innovative products have been installed across 72 rooms and will help to provide patients with high-quality care at Fieldhead Hospital which incorporates adult male and female wards, an older people’s ward, a psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU), and high quality activity, leisure, eating and outdoor spaces.

Wallgate’s products are specifically designed to appear and operate as conventional washrooms products, providing a familiar and normalised environment, yet still being secure, damage resistance and innovative. The previous centre could only offer shared washroom facilities whereas patients will now be able to shower in their own en-suites which will help with their journey to recovery, while still providing a safe space.

The project was split into four phases, with the first phase starting September 2017 and the final phase completing in March 2019, marking the completion of the £17m ‘Fieldhead master plan.’ All three of the wards are now accredited by the Royal College of Psychiatrists, showing the Trusts dedication to offering state-of-the-art therapeutic care.

Rob Kimber, Wallgate’s Technical Sales Manager who worked closely on this project said that he was “very pleased to see South West Yorkshire Partnerships creating such an innovative space for mental health patients, a modern, normalised environment that will aid the patient’s recovery.”
